Hobbled Henson delivers in ISU’s sweep of Baylor

“I don’t know how, but I just missed a stair,” said Henson, who wore Ugg boots during her fall. “I landed in the splits, and it was hurting really bad.”

Her right hamstring heavily taped, Henson played only in the front row. Caitlin Mahoney subbed in for Henson in the back row.

Entering the match, Henson led the Big 12 Conference in kills per game (4.27).

“She’ll find a way to put the ball down,” middle blocker Jamie Straube said. “It’s awesome.”

Straube added 10 kills and four blocks for the No. 12 Cyclones (17-5 overall, 10-4 Big 12).

In the first game, Straube put down five kills on seven swings for a .714 hitting percentage.

“Jamie has the ability to dominate matches, take over matches, and we’re kind of beginning to see that now,” Johnson-Lynch said.

The Cyclones trailed 8-2 in the second game and 3-0 in the third game.

Both times, the Cyclones rallied.

“They dig a lot of balls,” Henson said of the Bears, who lead the league in digs. “That makes it hard to get kills sometimes. You have to change up your shots.”

Henson, Straube, Alison Landwehr, Carly Jenson and Deb Stadick each had a kill during the stretch to go with a Mass ace and two Baylor hitting errors.

“Baylor maybe let go a little bit,” Johnson-Lynch said. “They started making a lot of errors and let us off the hook.”

Briana Tolbert put down eight kills to pace the Bears (12-12, 5-8).

The match capped the Cyclones’ stay at Ames High.

ISU, which has played all of its home matches at the 2,000-seat gym because of flooding in August, will return to a renovated Hilton Coliseum for Saturday’s match against Missouri.

By then, Henson said, she hopes to be playing in the back row again.

“I feel pretty good,” Henson said. “I didn’t really notice the hamstring that much.”
