US: Deckers sues Bearpaw Ugg “knock-offs”

Footwear business Deckers Outdoor Corporation is taking legal action against Tom Romeo and Romeo & Juliette, makers of Bearpaw boots, for allegedly copying its best-selling Ugg brand.

Deckers filed the suit in the US District Court in the Central District California, and is seeking a court order to stop the alleged copying of the trade dress design of several types of Ugg boot.


UGG boots women Casuals“Ugg Australia’s success has fuelled an entire industry of knock-off products like Bearpaw,” said Angel Martinez, chairman and CEO of Deckers.

“Bearpaw is misleading consumers and creating significant brand confusion by repeatedly copying our designs, but using inferior materials, constructions and craftsmanship.”

Since Deckers bought the Ugg brand in 1995, sales have climbed rapidly and are expected to exceed US$800m in 2010.
