The North Collier Boulevard retailer hosted an open house Thursday to show off its new collection of FitFlops and Ugg. The former offers footwear that claims to “give you a workout while you walk”; the latter are trendy suede boots that have been photographed on just about every Hollywood celebrity imaginable. What the two brands have in common are higher-than-average price tags, a loyal following and exclusivity to the Marco Island store.
discount jimmy choo“Wearing the FitFlop sandal is very addictive,” states Mike Schmidlin, the Southeast sales agent for the United Kingdom-based company. “A lot of people don’t want to wear anything else.”

“I wear them first thing in the morning,” she said. Murfin, like many customers, suffers foot pain from bursitis and plantar fasciitis and has a hard time finding comfortable shoes. A friend suggested she try FitFlops and now she’s hooked, purchasing five different pair in five months.

Although the company doesn’t claim its footwear cures any ailments, according to its website, it has proven that the shoes increase muscle activation in the hamstring, quadriceps and buttocks. Wearers credit the shoe for reducing back, foot and knee pain.

“I’m going to get the gold ones,” Murfin said decisively after trying on several different pairs in an array of colors. Murfin was especially interested in the Spring 2011 collection that was available for pre-order, and offers a sneaker called the FF Supertone.

Leah Fhon, Island Trends manager and buyer, says the store sells thousands of FitFlops each month, both in-store and on its website. She adds that several local podiatrists have suggested that their patients buy the shoes, and refer them to the store, which is the only one on the Island that sells the footwear.
jimmy choo handbags“They have a huge following,” Fhon said. “If you’re on your feet all day, they’re comfortable and you get a workout.”
When FitFlops were first introduced to the U.S. market in 2008, Island Trends was one the first in the United States to carry the brand. A few months later, Oprah Winfrey anointed the footwear as one of her favorite things, and the shoes started flying off the shelves. Back then, the company only offered one style in three different colors. Now there are boots, clogs, strapped sandals in addition to the original FitFlops, which now come with patent leather, animal print and even Swarovski crystal-encrusted straps.

The footwear is so popular that the brand’s Rock Star model from the Spring, 2011 collection (which retails at $250) sold out before even arriving in the store. Not bad for a sandal with a price tag that starts at $59.99 and taps out at approximately $200.

Between the popular footwear and the addition of Ugg, an Australian-based line of suede boots which will be available exclusively on Marco at Island Trends, Fhon expects the upcoming tourist season to be a busy one. Especially for the sale of Ugg’s which Fhon admits is a bit unusual to see people wearing in sunny, Southwest Florida.

Customers at its Naples store on Fifth Avenue South will see the addition of a Robert Graham concept shop within the store. Like FitFlops and Ugg, the clothing designer has cultivated a loyal following of buyers.
